Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is a real prize for the those of us living near Chicago that enjoy open spaces. The national tallgrass prairie program is similar to national grassland program in the Western U.S., with holdings in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado. Like the national grassland program, the national tallgrass prairie program is part of the U.S. Forest Service.
The Midewin Tallgrass Prairie is the result of the reclaimation of the former U.S. arsenal in Joliet, IL. The desire is to recreate the open tallgrass prairie landscape that was so pervasive, treeless, and endless in the Midwest. While there are still artifacts from its former arsenal days, the progress is exciting to watch. I look forward to when more of these lands will be opened for use.
