The Rock River flows from Horicon, WI to the Quad Cities, and into the Mississippi. My son and I canoed from Byron, IL to Orgeon, IL, camping overnight in Lowden State Park. Having living in Rockford, IL for six years, I was still surprised how wide and deep the river was. In spite of the size, the current was pretty steady, and caused no difficulties. As we approached Oregon, we started to see the cliffs and bluffs common in the area. At Lowden State Park, we saw the impressive 50' statue often mistaken for Chief Blackhawk.

After portaging our canoe at Lowden State Park, and laboriously carrying it up to the campground, we had a nice evening by the fire. Instead of portaging the upcoming dam in Oregon, we were picked up at the campground.
